Mohamud Hashi Abdi, the minister of the presidency of Somaliland staged a bloodless coup d’état by nominating a religious council dominated by Wahabi ideology adherents.
The nominated council consists of 11,which 9 of them are from the Salafi Jihadi followers of Wahabi ideology, the other two are from the moderate Qadariya stream, but they are old (90 and above years old) enough even to attend council meetings. For instance, Hasan Ali warsame is the son of the founder of Alitahad Al islamiya, Sheikh Ali warsame, currently residing in Burao.
People, who are familiar with the personal background of the current Minister of the Presidency Mohamud Hashi Abdi, argue that he abhors the democratic form of governance and favors either a clan form of governance or Islamic courts system style of government. Therefore, it is incumbent on Somaliland election stakeholders to not let individuals like this Minister jeopardize the Somaliland election processes.
Although Somaliland constitution mentions a religious council to be nominated, it puts a condition, enacting the laws governing this council before their nomination. Currently no one knows where their powers start and where it ends.
Political analysts in Somaliland and in the region, are asking why this time? they have concluded Minister Mohamud is trying to reward his fellow Alit had companions and at the same he wants to derail the democratic process, where he seas the end of his political career, as soon as the election takes place. Therefore, it is incumbent on Somaliland election stakeholders to not let individuals like this Minister jeopardize the Somaliland election processes.
